Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok

The Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok is the youngest professional symphony orchestra in Hungary both as an ensemble and with regard to the age of its members. They have become professional in 1993 thanks to Budafok- Tétény Budapest 22nd district Municipality that maintains and supports the orchestra. The average age of the musicians is under 30 even today.
Within a rather short period of time the orchestra has earned a good position in Hungarian music life and they were also highly successful abroad in countries like Spain, France, Italy and Germany.
Every year they open 7 subscription series at the Music Academy, the National Concert Hall and in Budafok. In addition to the concerts they organise themselves they regularly take part at various renowned festivals in Hungary. In 2006 they gave a concert on the opening day of the Mozart Festival organised by the Palace of Arts, they gave a concert with enormous success a the Symphonia Hungarorum Festival for symphony orchestras and in March they appeared at the Budapest Spring Festival as well. In the summer of 2006 they were guests of the Miskolc Opera Festival, the Buda Castle Summer event series and the BudaFest Festival.
The orchestra has become a key ensemble of the Zemplen Festival, an event with a long tradition. Each August they give several concerts there.

During the past period they worked with a great number of highly acclaimed conductors and soloists – both with the most outstanding members of the young generation and with renowned representatives of the international music scene.: Beside Michael Stern, Jörg-Peter Weigle, Roberto Paternostro, Yeruham Sharovsky, Patrik Ringborg, Dian Tchobanov, Gergely Kesselyák in the 2006/07 season they will work with conductors like Yoav Talmi, Boris Brott, Yoshikazu Fukumura and Zoltán Kocsis just to name but a few. Numerous world-famous soloists appeared at the orchestra’s concerts – for instance Shlomo Mintz, Yossi Arnheim, Peter Lika, Sharon Rostorf.
They do not only give symphonic concerts but they are often heard in theatre performances – ballets and operas, which shows the exceptional colourfulness of the ensemble. They staged many performances together with the world-famous Ballet of Győr and the Szeged Contemporary Ballet (e.g.: Carl Orff: Carmina Burana, Mozart: Requiem). In the spring of 2005 they played at a stage performance of Weber’s Freischütz at the Palace of Arts, in August the same year they appeared at a staging of Bizet’s Carmen directed by György Selmeczi in the framework of the Zemplen Festival. The world of jazz in not alien to this orchestra of young musicians either. In March 2006 their “symphonic jazz” concert was a smashing success at the Budapest Spring Festival.

Oratorical works appear on their repertoire frequently. Every year the orchestra opens an oratorio-series called “Vox Humana” together with the Budapest Academic Choral Society.

Beside the classical repertoire the ensemble considers the performance of contemporary compositions an important task.
Many works have become integrated in the Hungarian repertoire thanks to the orchestra – particularly the oeuvre of Ernő Dohnányi. Numerous premiers are also associated to the orchestra’s name like the works Aharon Harlap, Y. Bardanashvili, Ferenc Farkas, Gil Shohat, Levente Gyöngyösi, Miklós Kocsár, György Orbán, Tamás Pánczél, Emil Petrovics, Roland Szentpáli, János Vajda among others.
The Honvéd Male Choir is a regular partner of the orchestra as well as the Budapest Academic Choral Society and the Rajkó Ensemble.
