Zempléni Fesztivál
The Zemplen Festival (previously Zemplen Arts Days) is a crucial cultural event in the Northern Hungary region. The event was established by the Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra and funded by the Antenna Hungaria Rt. in 1992 and the festival has filled Zemplen with music each August every since, which shows the success of the initiative.
In 2004 the Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra decided not to continue the organisation of the event that was taken over by the Interkultur Hungaria Kht. by the request of Antenna Hungaria Rt.
Currently the Artistic Director of the festival is Gábor Hollerung and its Managing Director is Miklós Turjányi. The aim of the organisers is to offer the possibility to the greatest possible number of young artists to introduce themselves and also to involve as many local artists, folklore groups, villages and nationalities as possible
Types of Programme:
Opening and Closing Concert
These are representative concerts of the festival. The Opening Concert traditionally takes place at the Court of the Rákóczi Castle in Sárospatak while the Closing Concert is hosted by the Sárospatak Calvinist Church.
Festival Concert
The Festival Concert is the central event of the festival, it is organised every festival day. It is a big event in the focus of the daily programme, closely related to the topic of the day that is usually hosted by a representative venue in one of the four towns in the region (Sárospatak Sátoraljaújhely, Tokaj, Szerencs).
The concerts show great variety, they have to live up to high artistic expectations constantly.
The performances usually begin at 8 pm. The concerts are combined with wine tasting to make them even more attractive for visitors.
Chamber Concerts and other events
The frame of the festival consists of traditional and highly popular events where smaller chamber orchestras perform in the historical setting of local monuments.
The purpose of these programmes is to draw the visitors’ attention to hidden natural, architectural and cultural values of the region.
Feasts
Feasts have also become integral parts of the festival’s tradition, which entertain guests with a spectacular programme in addition to exquisite gastronomy.
Traditional feasts are the following: Renaissance Feast at the Sárospatak Rákóczi Castle, Baroque Feast and Afternoon Coffee at the Gala Hall of the Sátoraljaújhely Town Hall, feast at the Ős Kaján Restaurant in Tolcsva, Hunters’ Feast at the Károlyi Hunting Seat in Kőkapu.
Beside these events each year varied gastronomic programme awaits the guests of the festival where the famous Tokaj wine is always protagonist.
