“Comprehendible Music”
During his entire carrier he pays particular attention to the musical education of young people and to the training of a future generation of concert-goers. Both as a conductor and as a teacher he became known for his powerful, captivating presentations and his entertaining and delightful rehearsals in Hungary and abroad.
His consequent pedagogical concept helped him to turn his orchestra into a top ensemble and his amateur choir to be a regular participant of highly professional performances.
His knowledge compares to that of musicologists, which he shares with his public in an amazingly natural and comprehendible manner. He presents his lectures in a mind-boggling way with endless humour – evoking Bernstein’s style – that captivates even those less receptive to music.
Youth and family concert series of his orchestra – “Comprehendible Music” series is at the Music Academy and the “Secrets of Music” in Budafok - enjoy great popularity, always sold out. At these concerts high musical standard is combined with musical education also actively involving his young audience in the performances.
One of his most popular series, “Comprehendible Music” has been on for over 10 years now. These occasions are intended for the entire family. From grandchildren to grandparents all the generations are represented in its public.
In the first half of the concert the conductor tries to help the audience understand the essence of the musical language through his explanations, in the simplest form, understandably for every age group, supported by musical excerpts from the compositions. In the second half the complete composition is performed by the orchestra without interruptions.
The fact that there is a great need and demand for this “audience training”, educative concerts is proven by the success of this annual series. The number of visitors is constantly rising; the series initially organised at the Municipal Concert Hall (Pesti Vigadó) moved to the Music Academy four years ago and the number of subscribers almost doubled. The audience and school music teachers requested years ago that these occasions should not only be once and unrepeatable but they would like to have the possibility to listen to them several times. This wish might be fulfilled already in the next concert season. There are also plans for recording the lectures at the Music Academy.
The motto of the 2006/2007 season is “Poetry and Music”, the series will include among other works Mendelssohn’s Midsummernight’s Dream, Dukas’: The Sorcerers Apprentice, Liszt: Mazeppa, János Vajda’s oratorical scherzo, St. Peter and the Soldiers performed by the Honvéd Male Choir.
“The Secrets of Music”
“The Secrets of Music” series is for the younger generation of children – grammar school age. The concept of this series was renewed two years ago and it became enormously popular among schoolchildren. Concerts combined with explanations by the conductor are related to the educational material of the schools. It is very colourful and varied: last year the performance of the Nutcracker accompanied by a storyteller, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and the concert of Mozart’s selected compositions in honour of his anniversary were highly successful. Next year’s programme promises to be even more exciting. At the “Music of the Nations” concert Bizet’s, Elgar’s, Copland’s, Borodhin’s compositions will sound, at the “Hungarian National Opera” concert Erkel’s and Kodály’s popular melodies will be performed with the Honvéd Male Choir. The concert called “Water and Music” will present a selection of Händel’s, Schumann’s, Liszt’s and Smetana’s compositions, “The Birth of the Concerto” programme offers concertos by Corelli, Vivaldi, Bach and Beethoven.
